History

Since 2004, MLP has provided an in-depth understanding of the political, economic, cultural, civic, and governmental fabric of San Antonio. Participation in the program presents the opportunity for class members to join local nonprofit and civic boards upon completion of the program as well as join the MLP Alumni Association. Modeled after a nonprofit organization in Naples, Florida, the Greater Naples Leadership, Inc., the first academic session took place during 2004-2005 with 35 participants. MLP operates under the 501(c)(3) and fiscal umbrella of United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County.

Jane Phipps served nearly 20 years as Co-Owner, CFO and CMO of Fresh From Texas, a fresh fruit and vegetable processing company, she started with her husband in 1980. In 1999, Jane and her husband, Bob, decided to retire and sold the company to begin the next chapter of their lives. Realizing the need for a new pool of qualified community-minded board members, in 2004 Jane decided to spearhead the Masters Leadership Program of San Antonio and Bexar County. The program quickly grew and is now the primary source for knowledgeable, qualified and dedicated nonprofit and civic board members in Greater San Antonio.

Jane served as the MLP’s executive director until her retirement in April, 2013.
