Program Information

What Is The Program...

The program consists of 12 all-day sessions, each focusing on a different aspect of the community, through in-depth presentations, panel discussions, on-site visits and field trips. Sessions are planned and hosted by the Board of Directors.

Each year, the MLP's in-depth curriculum is shaped by current events, city growth and advancement goals, and the many needed services provided to residents of the nation's 7th largest city. Success stories and challenges co-exist.

The MLP curriculum features prominent regional and local experts who share their perspectives and insights on important current issues and engage in lively question and answer dialogue with the participants. Topics include: history and government, military impact, growth and economics, arts and communication, criminal justice system, education, technology, bioscience and health care, environment and human services.

What Are The Benefits Of Participating...

Within a collegial atmosphere, you gain an in-depth understanding of the political, economic, cultural, civic and governmental fabric of our city and establish important networking contacts. You will become a prime candidate for appointment to nonprofit and civic boards and commissions.

Am I Eligible For The Program...

Men and women considering applying to the program should be proven leaders in their field of endeavor - whether in the profit or nonprofit sectors - who are now interested in applying their skills and experience to community service. Most candidates have achieved a position of leadership and responsibility and a strong track record of accomplishment. Whether retired, semi-retired or nearing retirement, candidates should have the time, schedule flexibility and desire to give something back to the community.

Selection Guidelines...

The 50-55 class members are typically executives or professionals who are:

  • long-time residents who want to become more involved and need an avenue for engagement
  • new to San Antonio and want to learn more about the area of community service opportunities
  • currently involved in the community but wish to recommit to volunteerism
  • retired, semi-retired or nearing retirement
  • mature in their career and have the flexibility to attend all class days and commit to volunteer service

The selection process is competitive. Spaces are limited as there are typically more applicants than class slots.

Attendance Policy...

Individuals must be committed to attending all 12 class days (normally full days from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) as 100 percent attendance is expected.

Tuition...

Tuition for the program is $1,250. Limited scholarship funds are available to qualified candidates.

What's Expected Of Me...

At the program's conclusion, you will be actively encouraged to use your new knowledge to serve on the boards of nonprofit organizations and governmental commissions in the community. The MLP will assist you in matching your skills, talents and interests to specific community needs and organizations.

The MLP bridges the gap between these professionally-successful program participants and the nonprofit agencies serving those most in need of their skills. Placement of the MLP graduates on nonprofit and civic boards is the MLP's most vital function. Proper matching provides lifelong sharing of attained leadership and subject matter skills which, in turn, is creating improved governance, accountability and financial stability for the entities they serve.

You will also be invited to join the MLP Alumni Association, which offers opportunities to attend special educational programs featuring outstanding speakers and social activities to further expand networking and class friendships.
